Unexpected art – there’s a surprise at The Brunswick Centre

During a visit to Scarborough town, I noticed a previously vacant store in the Brunswick Centre with a vibrant window display and stopped for a look.

Crescent Arts – Place Window

I found a welcoming and vibrant space filled with exciting pieces of art and a cool Children’s Art Creation Station, exploring the theme of ‘Place’ brought together by Crescent Arts.

Firstly, I don’t usually visit Art Galleries, exhibitions or displays. With a young family usually in tow, it’s not where I would usually think to go, plus I always worry that I might not ‘get’ what the artist wants to portray.

Finding an art exhibition unexpectedly in the comfortable surroundings of my local shopping centre removed those pressures. I spent a little time reading the helpful descriptions of the different pieces before seeing them through the artists’ eyes and coming away like I truly understood it.

Did I mention that they have a children’s Art Creation Station? Yes, that enabled the above to happen!

Crescent Arts – Place Exhibition

The work has been created by nine artists who have been supported by Crescent Arts to create work that asks what ‘place’ looks like to them, how they define and value the places that they live, visit or dream of.

During the last two years, with restrictions and more time spent indoors and in our local area, I think the idea of people’s sense of place as a theme is brilliant.

So many of us have found we appreciate where we live now, and we are all lucky to call the Yorkshire Coast our home. The exhibition is open until 28th August 2021, and you can find out more by visiting Crescent Arts.
