Sewing the seeds of an epic adventure

Sewing the seeds of an epic adventure

It feels like a long time now since I was out on the bitingly cold day in Scarborough, listening to The Odyssey on a walk throughout the seafront, but it is a memory that has stuck with me. Something about listening to this epic tale told by people from the area resonated with me, and I've been following the story, eagerly awaiting the next instalment. Thankfully, I didn't need to wait too long, so when I saw the next part, "The Trojan Wars", advertised, I put it straight in the diary. It was well worth the trip out to the…

Greek Mythology – The Trojan Wars

Greek Mythology – The Trojan Wars

It is often said that the Greeks pretty much invented everything. Whether they actually invented storytelling or not I don’t know. But one thing you cannot deny is the fact they really knew how to tell a tale. They threw everything into it. Love, loss, battles, heroes, heroines, monsters, gods and adventures galore. One of my favourite films as a kid was Jason & the Argonauts (an ancient Greek tale). The skeleton battle was ground-breaking for its time, though it looks positively cartoon-like next to today’s CGI techniques. It’s still a great film, fundamentally because it’s a great story.  https://youtu.be/C-ZQGRM7GW0…

Inside Scoop – Alpamare Visit 2021

Inside Scoop – Alpamare Visit 2021

On our summer bucket list for 2021 was a visit to Alpamare. As a family of three (two adults & a three-year-old), this was definitely a treat at ÂŁ41 for three hours entry; (to be fair, we were visiting on the weekend in peak season). However, I wondered if it would be worth it at the time, knowing our child was too small for any of the attractions' impressive water slides. Alpamare slide Entry to Alpamare has changed since COVID. They now operate an excellent online booking system which allows you to see the different tariffs depending on the time…

Unexpected art – there’s a surprise at The Brunswick Centre

Unexpected art – there’s a surprise at The Brunswick Centre

During a visit to Scarborough town, I noticed a previously vacant store in the Brunswick Centre with a vibrant window display and stopped for a look. Crescent Arts - Place Window I found a welcoming and vibrant space filled with exciting pieces of art and a cool Children's Art Creation Station, exploring the theme of 'Place' brought together by Crescent Arts. Firstly, I don't usually visit Art Galleries, exhibitions or displays. With a young family usually in tow, it's not where I would usually think to go, plus I always worry that I might not 'get' what the artist wants…

Scarborough…the influencer of multiple generations

Scarborough…the influencer of multiple generations

When I first heard about the Big Ideas by The Sea Festival, it felt BIG and unconventional. A festival of inspirational writers, artists and speakers talking about the town and how it inspired them would not have felt out of place in a big city. Still, for a seaside resort, it made me start to question how much did I really know about Scarborough? You don't need to be in the town for long before stumbling past the Stephen Joseph Theatre and, after some quick searching, find out about fantastic writers like Alan Ayckbourn, but when looking at the event…

Beauty from beach cleans!

Beauty from beach cleans!

It’s a personal choice to want to buy products which are kind to our environment, that doesn’t break the bank but also are good on the eye!  I have found it too easy over the last year to “click and buy” and detach the reality of how harmful items can be to our environment when looking for a quick find for others…or myself…but I am on a mission to make smarter shopping decisions. I love it when a business makes it easy! On a particularly brisk day out walking with the dog on North Bay in Scarborough, the need for…

A story never felt so real…and so Coast!

A story never felt so real…and so Coast!

It was a blustery day on the south bay in Scarborough, but needless to say, there is something quite comforting about the sting of the bitter sea air when you live on the Yorkshire Coast! This day was a little different, though, because I was excited about trying out a new walk, which promised to capture my imagination...and be easy on the limbs. I had decided to add a bit of variety to the dog walk by downloading a new Echoes App where I could listen to The Odyssey, which had been voiced by people living on the coast. It…
