Greek Mythology – The Trojan Wars

Greek Mythology – The Trojan Wars

It is often said that the Greeks pretty much invented everything. Whether they actually invented storytelling or not I don’t know. But one thing you cannot deny is the fact they really knew how to tell a tale. They threw everything into it. Love, loss, battles, heroes, heroines, monsters, gods and adventures galore. One of my favourite films as a kid was Jason & the Argonauts (an ancient Greek tale). The skeleton battle was ground-breaking for its time, though it looks positively cartoon-like next to today’s CGI techniques. It’s still a great film, fundamentally because it’s a great story.  https://youtu.be/C-ZQGRM7GW0…

Indoor Fun for the Family this January

Indoor Fun for the Family this January

January can bring the worst of the weather, but there's still plenty of indoor family fun to be had across the Yorkshire Coast. After the excitement of the Christmas break, ideas on keeping the kids occupied can start to run a bit thin. So here are some ways that I keep my little ones entertained when the weather isn't kind - that don't cost you the earth either. I've provided a few examples here but be sure to check out your local village or town that may offer something closer to home. Swimming - Make a splash and visit one…

Wash the dust off your soul and combat Blue Monday

Wash the dust off your soul and combat Blue Monday

Monday 17 Jan 2022, the third Monday in January, is said to be the most depressing day of the year - Blue Monday. So here's a suggestion to combat those blues - visit an Art Gallery. I suspect that idea might provoke a bit of a love-hate reaction in some people. If you’re not in the 'art gallery lover' camp, galleries can feel like large empty rooms with weird daubs on the wall. Or, conversely, small rooms jammed with crazy stuff. There can feel like there is pressure to ‘understand’ and ‘interpret’ the ‘feelings’ or 'emotions' being expressed. It's just…

Keeping Warm 🧣

Keeping Warm 🧣

Hats, Scarves and Gloves, matching or not? Passing the time, chatting with friends, listening to each other's points of view on specific topics can be pretty educational and thought-provoking. However, we all know we can talk about, well, just about anything! I was listening to my friend talking about her purchase of a new hat and scarf, she then added gloves into the mix, and it sounded like she had lost a penny and found a pound! "It's a matching set," she declared! So for the next 10 minutes, our conversation was about hats, scarves and gloves, which looks best,…

The Letter……💌

The Letter……💌

Making New Memories When the decorations have been taken down, and the last bit of tinsel sparkle has been dusted away, or so I believe, (I always miss something), I began to think about what would be nice to do next?🤔It needs to be thoughtful and meaningful to create a new memory. Then! a light bulb moment! I will write a letter to my Aunty. My Aunty grew up when, "in those days," it was "the norm" to write and receive letters. The sound of the "letterbox clatter" would have her racing to the window, looking out and shouting "the…

Christmas Eve Magic

Christmas Eve Magic

I don't know whether it's the memory of childhood excitement, the thought of surprises and fabulous food, or just that everything is sprinkled with glitter and festiveness, but it is magical at this time. I recognise that those with young children have already had a week of them bouncing out of their skins (yes, I know - it's only been a week since they broke up from school!). Many are at utter fever-pitch at this point. So this is a good time to slip into traditions - the relative calm of repetitive activities. I'm sure we all have our Christmas…

My Christmas Gift 🎁

My Christmas Gift 🎁

A gift to me from me 😇 The thrill of going shopping can be a wonderful experience for me, in fact, I just love it! Especially when it comes to Christmas when it's as good a reason as any to treat myself, and as we say, I've been very good this year, thank you, Santa! So, after doing the housework, I jumped in the car and headed to town, parked up, threw my oversized bag on my shoulder and set off walking towards Westborough in Scarborough. A cold chill in the air reminded me of the time of year, and…

Dixons – Filey

Dixons – Filey

Has got the Bloomin lot! One of my wonderful friends had recently bought a house and was telling our group of friends, "if you are thinking of buying a present for me, can you get me a voucher from Dixons? I have seen the perfect oven in there; it's a SMEG oven", This was then followed by exciting tales of being able to whip up the perfect Christmas dinner and the obligatory pigs in blankets. Needless to say, her enthusiasm and multiple "it's amazing" made me chuckle because I'm not sure what my response would be if someone got me…
