Top 10 Festive Family Fun

We’ve passed the mid-November point now, which can only mean one thing – it’s full-on Christmas here at LYC! 

Everyone loves visiting a Grotto at Christmas, but there’s so much more to do with the family! Here’s our Top 10 list of extra family fun going on in 2021 across the Yorkshire Coast.

  1. Whitby Winter Festival

Whitby welcomes you to their first Winter Festival this year, where you can expect a buzzing Christmas market, a real ice rink, and dazzling displays. The Festival runs from 26th November to the end of March 2022.

Booking your session on the ice rink is advised, so get your skates on!

2. Scarborough Ice Rink

There is another ice rink here, but this time in Scarborough’s town centre, perfect for breaking up those arduous shopping trips!  

All ages and abilities are welcome, glide along to music and lights, or book one of their relaxed session for a more peaceful skate. 

The Scarborough Ice Rink is open Mon to Sat 11 am to 8pm, and Sun 10 am to 7 pm. You must pre-book your tickets as they are not on sale at the rink.

3. Filey Fishtive Tree 

This is a light switch on with a difference! Filey’s beautiful “fishtive” tree is located on Coble Landing and is intricately built from lobster and crab pots, you can see the Tree being illuminated on 4th December or visit to enjoy it until 5th January.  

4. Santa arrives at Boyes

You can’t miss the age-old tradition of Santa arriving on a boat in Scarborough Harbour before precessing to his Grotto at Boyes! A brilliant event taking place this year on Saturday 20th November from 12noon. 

5. Brid Xmas Tree Trail

The theme for the 2021 Christmas Tree Trail in Bridlington is Christmas Music. The Trail begins on 4th – 18th December, locations are still being confirmed, and you can find more information as it’s released on their Facebook page. 

6. Robin Hood’s Bay Victorian Weekend

Take a visit to the picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay and enjoy the Victorian Weekend from 3rd to 5th December. Enjoy traditional favourites such as Welly Wanging, Face Painting, The Duck Race, Carols in the Dock, Arts & Craft Fairs, plus new events including a Lantern Trail & Lantern Workshop, Mr Shady’s Silhouette Salon, and Birds of Prey.

7. Sewerby Hall & Gardens

Experience fantastic lighting and sounds in a magical outdoor journey at Sewerby Hall & Gardens with their Winter Woodland event. 

Visitors will also be able to sample a range of local craft stalls, a bar, and vintage fairground rides (have a small cost to ride). Take a look inside the House which will be fully dressed with Christmas decorations too.

8. Hornsea Light Switch On

Everyone loves a great Christmas light switch on event, the excitement, the build-up, the big button press! Join the crowds heading to Hornsea on Friday 26th Nov and enjoy the activities starting from 6 pm to 8 pm with the lights switched on at 6.30 pm – so don’t be late!

9. Withernsea Shores Winter Festival

Visit Withernsea for a Winter Festival by the sea held at the picturesque Valley Gardens this year. Soak up the atmosphere with live music, German Food stalls, crafters market, and carnival stalls plus you get that festive glow by knowing that all proceeds will help to support the Shores Community Pantry and food bank.

10. Whitby Krampus Run

Enjoy a European tradition that gives a twist on our own with a visit to the Whitby Krampus Run on 4th/5th December. 

In parts of Europe on the Eve of the Feast of St. Nicholas, the Saint visits homes to give gifts to good children. He is accompanied by his dark counterpart, The Krampus, who teases and punishes naughty boys and girls. 

xpect to see elaborate costumes, parades with drummers and performances across the weekend, including ‘an outing of magical beasts’ on Sunday, taking place on the Abbey Headland following the first-ever Whitby Krampus Run “horse” race.
