Get Motivated to Get Out There

I don’t think there can be many of us that don’t desire to be more active and enjoy the great outdoors more – is there?

It’s often said that we are so fortunate living on our amazing Yorkshire Coast but how many of us take it for granted? Sometimes the beauty on our doorstep can be overlooked – when was the last time you actually got out there and explored somewhere new right here on your doorstep?

If you’re nodding in agreement at this point – then maybe what you need is a little extra motivation to help you get more active – get out there and enjoy where we live a little bit more.

We’re all motivated by different things hopefully one of these motivational challenges will give you that little extra nudge you need.

1. Take on a Challenge

Some people can’t resist a challenge – if that’s what gets you up and out there well here’s one for you. Take on the Cleveland Way, said to be one of the most scenic walking challenges. From Helmsley to Filey (or visa versa depending on your point of view), this horseshoe-shaped walk takes in some of the most breathtaking views from the clifftop paths as well as many stunning heritage sites along the way. It’s 109miles in total so don’t expect to complete it in a Sunday afternoon. It’s recommended you take 9 days to complete it in order to really appreciate it fully. Of course, you don’t have to do it all in one go – maybe split it into sections and spread it across a few weekends.

There are loads more walking and cycling routes along the whole of the Yorkshire Coast, most of which are mapped into Route YC why not work your way through them all – We challenge you!

2. Reward Yourself

Try setting out with a goal in mind – a special foody treat, a refreshing pint or delicious hot chocolate can tempt many of us and we have some fantastic places that can offer us these rewards. Pick your favourite treat location and set off on foot instead of drive – or park a few miles away (set your own goal here – but don’t take it too easy on yourself!). You’ll appreciate the treat so much more after your efforts. You can wipe out the guilt of any overindulgence by walking back again too.

Here’s a couple of suggestions to get you started:

Park up at the Filey Country Park and stretch your legs along the Filey Brigg, or you can walk right the way along the beach at low tide. A great place to reward yourself is White Lodge Hotel. We then suggest walking back through the old town back to the Country Park.

Another great beach walk is along the miles of sand at Bridlington. The South Beach is the longest – you can keep walking for miles towards Fraisthorpe beach and beyond. Try parking up in Bridlington near The Spa and stretch those legs as far as you can then turn back and reward yourself with a treat at Ritchie’s Cafe Bar or a giant scone at The Spa cafe.

We’d love to hear about your favourite ‘treat-walk’ please share your suggestions to @LoveYorkshireCoast

3. Connect with Epic Adventures

If you’re more at home with a book and love a good story – well geolocation stories might be just what you need to be tempted outdoors. All you need to do is download the Echoes app and head out to any of the 42 locations along the Yorkshire Coast – once you’re in range you will be able to hear the epic tale of the Odyssey as you walk. These tales come amazingly to life when surrounded by the landscape that inspired the retelling of this ancient tale. Given the number of locations – there is guaranteed to be a spot near you so there really is no excuse. Part two has just been released in most areas – so even if you’ve already done this – you can get back out there for Part Two!
