Scarborough hosts National Armed Forces Day

This year’s Armed Forces day is set to be bigger than ever as Scarborough host’s the National Armed Forces Day Event for the first time on Saturday 25 June 2022 in North and South Bay. Previous events have always attracted large crowds but with this being the first National event the town has hosted, it will attract many more and have more going on.

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for the troops and their families. The UK Armed Forces defend the UK and its interests. They are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism.

Getting there & parking

There are a number of road closures in place on the weekend, so your usual parking spot may not be accessible. For details of the road closures click here. We highly recommend using public transport and the park and ride facilities where possible.

What to expect & viewing areas

There are numerous displays planned throughout the day – see here for the most up-to-date scheduled events. These include air and ground displays as well as extensive military parades.

If you want to be in the thick of it, soaking up the atmosphere amongst the crowds, the main action will be taking place on South Bay, YO11 1PD. There are numerous seafront traders offering a range of food and beverages to suit all tastes but be prepared to queue. Here are a few of our favourites:

South Bay beach is extensive when the tide is out but it is expected to be at high tide for at least part of the day, so if you want to stroll on the beach as part of your experience of the day check out the tide times here.

Alternatively, you might want to step away from the main crowds and get more of a birds-eye view. We can recommend a visit to Scarborough Castle – the headland provides a fantastic view across the whole of the bay and you’ll get a fantastic close perspective of the air displays too! There is a small entry charge but its well worth it – plus you get to experience a bit of armed forces day medieval-style too! 😉

Another great viewing platform, slightly away from the main hub, is on South Cliff esplanade and gardens. You could grab one of the renowned scones at the Clock Cafe or afternoon tea at one of the elegant hotels on the esplanade.

However you decide to experience the day, make sure you have plenty of fluids and sun-cream because we fully expect the sun to shine!
