This week I visited Falling Foss and realised why this beauty spot is so popular with visitors and locals of all ages and abilities.
Having visited as a child, I remembered standing in awe of the enormous waterfall before me and feeling like this was a truly magical place.
Returning now as a mother to an adventurous five-year-old (with my mother also in tow), we took the two-mile circular walking route starting from May Beck car park, which has the bonus of meandering right outside Falling Foss tea gardens halfway around.
The first section of the trail takes you up through tranquil woodlands before dropping down into the forest, where you emerge at Falling Foss Team Rooms, situated next to the 30 ft spectacular waterfall of the same name.
The woodland-themed Tea Garden has lots of tables, some covered and all outside with a great view of the beck. Children have space to play, and the service was fast and friendly; expect fresh ciabatta rolls with bacon, salad bowls with olives and feta and an array of homemade cakes, treats and scones. They have excellent toilet facilities too, perfect before setting off on the last leg of the walk!
Having walked up the hill and experiencing the exciting sights and sounds of the waterfall, the trail takes you back downhill beside the calming May Beck, which leads you back to the car park.
This is such a lovely and memorable walk, suitable for all ages and abilities; some sections have uneven terrain, so make sure you think about footwear. It’s free to park, and here is more information about the walk, including directions too.
